Every Body Matters

TOGETHER WE CAN BUILD

Every•Body•Matters is an annual fundraising campaign to help build inclusivity and equality into our community. This flexible campaign will shift focus each year to respond to the needs of our community and improve the quality of life of those who need it most. In its first year, the campaign will focus on:

  • Creating awareness around accessibility and what it means for those living with physical limitations

  • How, working together, we can build accessibility and universal design into our communities to ensure everyone is able to engage and participate

During the campaign, we’ll be active in the community through our Every•Body•Matters Event Series. Funds raised from the campaign will be used to purchase and install equipment to improve accessibility within the homes of select recipients.

Accessibility

A MORE ACCESSIBLE COMMUNITY

24%

47%

115,000

of Canadians are living with a physical disability or challenge

of Canadians know someone who has a physical disability

Calgarians live with a physical limitation

These numbers will increase by an estimated 1.8% annually over the next 10 years, largely due to an aging population

Over the past year, we’ve all been exposed to an environment of inaccessibility - not being able to dine-in at your favorite restaurant, to go see a movie in a theatre, or even to visit friends and family in their homes. The pandemic has given us just a glimpse of what it’s like to live with limited access, but the truth is that even in the best of times accessibility isn’t a reality for everyone.

We often take for granted the ability to access the buildings and spaces in our communities, including our own homes. For individuals living with physical limitations, accessibility affects every aspect of daily life. Maybe a building doesn’t have an elevator or ramp, or the hallways are too narrow for a wheelchair. While these issues seem simple enough to fix, equipment and building modifications can be prohibitively expensive and there’s limited funding support available.

For those living with a physical disability, universal design will reduce social isolation and improve mental and physical health by allowing these individuals greater independence and freedom to socialize, contribute and remain active and engaged. Removing barriers to access allows us to be truly inclusive!

Based in Calgary, the Evan Shaw Accessibility Foundation is a non-profit that aims to provide accessibility solutions for individuals with mobility issues, such as persons with disabilities, injuries, or seniors aging-in-place. By funding equipment procurement, installation and maintenance, the foundation works to eliminate the physical and financial barriers faced by members of our community, both in private homes and in public spaces.
