Mental health and mental illness are often used interchangeably but they are actually different. Mental health includes our everyday emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Mental illness is a mental health condition that results in impaired functioning such as Schizophrenia or Bi-Polar Disorder, which is diagnosed by a psychiatrist using the Diagnostic Statistical Manual.
Paying attention to our mental health is just as important as our physical health. Coping with a life changing spinal cord injury or neurological diagnosis can greatly impact personal well-being, family and interpersonal relationships and the ability to contribute to community or society. Speaking to a Synaptic counsellor is an important part of our care plans to ensure our clients are provided with all of the tools, resources and support that will contribute to their overall mental health. This is a crucial element to helping our clients reach their personal goals and improve their quality of life.
